Re: Translation
Thank you for the translation. I am glad he wasn’t getting another fine. My family seemed to get a lot of those. :D In the Church meeting book from which this came, I see a lot of the farmer’s signatures on the pages. As property owners did they run the town? Were they given special privileges and p...

Re: Distressing Karvala newspaper article
Just a thought….. I found a case about a stabbing and it seems the court was more interested in imposing a large fine instead of jail time. So perhaps that is the same for this case.

Translation
The handwriting on this page is terrible. Could someone please translate the paragraph about Erik Eriksson Anttila on the bottom left page. I don’t need the entire paragraph translated - just a summary would be great. I think it is about paying a fine in Lappajärvi and Alajärvi but I can’t figure ou...

Re: Distressing Karvala newspaper article
Thank you for the links. The second link took me to the court archives and although the Karvala case was not there, I found a very interesting case concerning other family members. The archives cover the years 1701-1873 and just my luck, the Karvala case I was looking for occurred in November of 187...

Re: Distressing Karvala newspaper article
I am not sure what I am looking for. I ended up on the website national.finna.fi and found the archives “Ed:1 Court of Appeal decisions (1843-1898) but I can’t look at anything specific. I am also not sure that this is the correct website. I looked at other websites but they have recent court archiv...

Re: Distressing Karvala newspaper article
Thank you for the information. It doesn’t seem that my family was closely related to them. Thank goodness. But they were neighbors. What an awful way to die! What I can’t understand is why these three men did not spend the rest of their lives in jail. I have a relative in Sweden who spent two years ...

Distressing Karvala newspaper article
I somehow found access to some old Finnish newspapers from a Swede Finn website. Everything I seem to find is nothing but sad news about my family and the villages they were from - the typhus outbreak/famine of 1866-68, the auction of the Anttila homestead but the worst is what I found on this link....

Confirmation record
I found the attached confirmation record for Lisa Jacobsdotter Örn, my great-great grandmother. I found a key online in the Swedish archives to decipher the grading system but I am not sure if it is the correct one for the Finnish archives. There is no grading key in any of the confirmation books. I...

Re: Obtaining a record that is not online
Hapero, Thank you for all of the information. It’s interesting that his father’s estate inventory is also not available online - Erik Eriksson Anttila died on February 14, 1866. It would have been nice to see what his estate (or his wife’s) consisted of so that I could get a description of the farm ...

Obtaining a record that is not online
Is it possible to obtain a record that is not online? The estate inventory for Ulrika Erkintytär Anttila of Alajärvi is not available online. She died on July 31, 1880. I am trying to figure out where her son Henry got the money to immigrate in November of that same year.
Thank you,
Lynette
Thank you,
Lynette

general questions
Hi, I have a few more questions that I can’t find the answers to. Was there a poor farm in each of the villages in the 1800’s? I noticed some crown farms in the Communion books. Were these poor farms? If not, why did the government have village farms? I also found entries of some of the villagers re...

Re: Anttila family questions
Kimpula, Thank you for the additional information. Birgit, In the 1880 document, I found my great-grandparents living and working on the farm where they met! They were not yet married. He was an independent lodger and she was a farm servant. In April of 1880, they married and he left for the United ...
