Hello,
My maiden name is Samanen. I'm trying to identify how my great-grandfather got that name.
Here is the book where he is listed as Johan Hermannson Birthdate April 27,1853

HEre is the book where he is listed the same but now the Samanen surname is listed.

Thanks for any information you can provide.

Change in surname
Re: Change in surname
His father was Herman Alexandersson.

So Hermansson was a patronymic name for Johan, not surname.
Later he choose to use surname Samanen.

Re: Change in surname
It's probable that he just decided to take that surname, it was a common habit at that time and particulary a bit later, and among craftsmen even demanded by law (and finally, years later, according to the 1920 law, every Finnish citizen had to have a surname).
