I need help in determining what correct name I should list an ancestor. My grand father spelled his name Maaninka when he grew up in Finland. When he came to America it was changed to Maaninga and he died with that name. Must have been in the pronouncing of the name that the clerk misspelled his name. In our tree I reference him as Maaninga because all his children and grand children spelled their name the same.
Should I refer him to Maaninka in the tree since that is what is on his birth certificate and his descendants as Maaninga? It seems to me that when he lived in Finland to the age of 18 he was Maaninka and that name stayed in Finland and became Maaninga when he arrived in America.
Please advise.
